El romanticismo fue un periodo que transcurrió, aproximadamente, entre principios de los años 1820 y la primera década del siglo XX, y suele englobar toda la música escrita de acuerdo a las normas y formas de dicho periodo. El romanticismo musical es un período de la música académica que fue precedido por el clasicismo y continuado por el modernismo.

El romanticismo musical está relacionado con el romanticismo, la corriente de cambios en literatura, bellas artes y filosofía, aunque suele haber ligeras diferencias temporales, dado que el romanticismo en aquellas artes y en la filosofía se suele reconocer entre los años 1780 y 1840. El romanticismo como movimiento global en las artes y la filosofía, tiene como precepto que la verdad no podía ser deducida a partir de axiomas, en el mundo había realidades inevitables que sólo se podía captar mediante la emoción, el sentimiento y la intuición. La Música del Romanticismo intentaba expresar estas emociones.

El término música romántica, que podría confundirse con la Música del Romanticismo, se entiende como toda música suave o con una atmósfera ensoñadora (no siempre ha de ser así). Ese término podría relacionarse con la palabra romántico que se estableció durante el romanticismo, pero no toda la Música del Romanticismo cumple con estas características. Del mismo modo, no toda la música romántica se puede relacionar con el período romántico.
